Laura Loomer is obsessed with getting her Twitter verification badge back after losing it during Twitter’s “verification purge” last November. This “purge” by Twitter also stripped white supremacists Richard Spencer and Jason Kessler of their verified status for “spreading hate.”
“Twitter just emailed me to tell me they are removing my “verified badge” because they claim my account “doesn’t comply with Twitter’s guidelines for verified accounts.” Translation: I’m a conservative,” Loomer explained while melting down on Twitter right after losing her blue check. “I could be sad about this and let it ruin my night, or I could view it as a compliment. I’ll take this as a sign that I’m really effective at countering the left. At the end of the day, it’s all about your mindset and perspective. @Cernovich has helped me understand that.”
Most people would let something as inconsequential as a verification badge on a social media website blow over after a few days. Not Loomer though. Over a year later, she is still obsessing about her blue check, tweeting about it almost daily.
“I used to be verified,” Loomer tweeted in June 2018. “But when you tell the truth too much, you get unverified. I’m only guilty of being too honest and truthful about the dangers facing this country.” To date, Loomer’s incessant requests for a blue checkmark have been ignored by Twitter.
Users familiar with the Twitter verification process spoke with Bernard Media about the Loomer situation. “The blue verified badge on Twitter lets people know that an account of public interest is authentic. That’s what the company says on their website. In the case of Loomer, she is not a figure of public interest. I’m interested in her alleged sex tape with Cernovich, but aside from that, what has she done? Twitter doesn’t need to verify someone that no one cares about.”
Personal acquaintances of Loomer speaking with Bernard Media are worried about her mental state after losing the verified blue check. “That verification status was literally Laura’s life. It’s not easy being Laura’s friend in the first place (big personality), but this last year has been harsh. It’s not the same Laura I used to know, she had a lot of her self worth tied up in that little blue check. To have that taken from her, something she values above all else, I don’t know, it was crushing.”
