Earlier this week, Turning Points USA communications director Candace Owens tried to leverage the tragic death of Mollie Tibbetts for political gain. Owens tweeted several grotesque comments including, “Mollie Tibbits was killed by an illegal immigrant. There will be ZERO outrage from Democrats and the spineless celebrities who march to their orders because they need open borders for votes. How many more AMERICAN lives is the left willing to sacrifice for elections?”
Owens posts were widely criticized across the internet. Soon, the family of Tibbetts made a statement through Twitter denouncing Owens politicization of the death. “Hey, I’m a member of mollies family and we are not so fucking small-minded that we generalize a whole population based on some bad individuals. Now stop being a fucking snake and using my cousins death as political propaganda. Take her name out of your mouth.” Tibbetts cousin continued, “And fyi @RealCandaceO, my whole family is hurting right now and you’re not helping. you’re despicable and this is so far from the loving and kind soul that mollie was. my prayers go out to you in hopes that maybe you’ll become a better person. not hedging my bets tho.”
Many on the right and left of the political spectrum were disgusted by Owens actions and spoke to Bernard Media about the same. “This is horrifying, it’s beyond politics. To politicize a death so shamelessly in this way. You have to be a sociopath. Period. She should be fired from TPUSA immediately. In fact, just shut the organization down all together.”
Now, despite the backlash, Owens is doubling down on her politicization of the brutal murder. Today, the story broke that Owens and Charlie Kirk, President of TPUSA were trying to book a speaking event at University of Iowa to talk about immigration issues. Primarily, their goal was to spread the word that if the USA had closed borders then the Tibbett death would have never occurred.
The University of Iowa replied to this request by not only rejecting the speaking engagement, but having the entire executive board of the organization resign.
After the bold action by the Iowa chapter, widespread speculation arose that insinuated Owens may be fired soon from TPUSA. Bernard Media spoke with several with knowledge of the situation. “Once Candace released those initial tweets there were some in the organization, who will not be named at this time, that thought it may be best if she resigned. Now, with this speaking event drama, several chapters are starting to talk amongst themselves that it may be best for her to be relieved of her duties. It’s shining a really negative light on TPUSA across the country. We’ll have to see what happens, but the organization is falling apart.”
Bernard Media will continue to monitor TPUSA’s downfall and Candace Owens employment status with the organization.
